  4. About the service:
  5. Let's say you spend a lot of time checking your favorite web site for updates. Maybe it's a software vendor and you've been checking it for an update to one of their programs. I find myself checking the Apple Software Updates page all the time for new versions of system files and utilities. Most of the time I end up hearing about the update from someone else because I haven't checked the Apple page recently. That's why we created the free PageWatch service. PageWatch is a server-based robot that keeps an eye on web pages for you. In a nutshell, you simply send an email message to PageWatch with the URL of the page you wish to track. PageWatch will then check that web page for you everyday. If that page is updated, you'll be sent email message letting you know the page has something new to investigate. The service can also be controlled by using forms at the site. <www.micromat.com/mmcs/pwatch/>

  7. About the software:
  8. PageWatch Palette (PWP) makes using the PageWatch service much easier. With PWP, you simply press a button on a palette which floats near your browser. The software automates the entire PageWatch submission process. It also allows you to stop watching a particular page without the need for sending email-based commands.

  10. The software is type 'appe.' This is a combination between an extension and a faceless background application. It uses very little disk space and RAM.

  12. Installation:
  13. * Place a copy of PWP in your extension folder and reboot. It will become active when you open your browser.
  14.  
  15. Browser Compatibility:
  16. PWP works with both Netscape Navigator 2.0 or above and MicroSoft Internet Explorer 2.0 or above. PWP currently does not support the CyberDog browser. Since it appears that Apple will be replacing that with an OpenDoc version of Navigator, we'll update PWP to work in that environment in the near future.

  18. System Compatibility:
  19. PWP should work on any Mac running system 7 or above.

  21. Usage Notes:
  22. * Clicking the lighthouse icon will minimize or maximize the palette.
  23. * The WATCH THIS PAGE button will submit the currently viewed URL to the PageWatch server.
  24. * The STOP WATCHING THIS PAGE button will notify the PageWatch server that you wish to no longer monitor the currently viewed URL (provided, of course, that you had at one time submitted the URL.)
  25. * The OPTIONS pull-down menu offers better HELP and links to more information.
  26. * The drag bar (on both the minmized and maximized palette) allows you to position the palette. These positions are stored in the preferences.

  28. Bugs:
  29. * Palette buttons may not be too responsive to clicks. Holding the mouse button down for an additional second seems to help. Installng TSM Fix by Matt Slot will usually cure the problem (it may have been included in the file you downloaded. If not, you can find it online or write to our Tech Support Department). The problem is not due to a bug in PWP, but rather in a ROM routine that Apple hasn't fixed yet.

  31. * The palette will float in front of dialog boxes. Weird. We're working on it.

  33. * Some users have reported incompatibilities with the FaxSTF fax driver. We're looking into this.

  36. Individuals may freely distribute this software provided that this document remains with the program. Companies who wish to distribute this program on software collections, bundles or online services must contact MicroMat Computer Systems for permission.
